This ARTDog was the victim of an accident.

9/15/2004: excerpt of an eMail to artist Ed McGowin from Jill Zinzi about the loss of his ARTdog:

I have good news & bads news. The good news is your beautiful dog's photo is in Passport Magazine. The bad news is, unfortunately a woman & her young son were vsiting the New Mil Bank where your ARTdog was displayed. The mother had no control over her child & he was running all over the bank & ran right into your dog. Your dog crashed to the floor in pieces. We are all very upset about it, as I'm sure you are. The bank put the pieces in a box. We are so sorry!

Ed McGowin
Blue Bird Dog
acrylic on unfired bisque dog, 12x23 inches, signed.

Sculptor and painter, in 1967 Ed McGowin won a Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. He is in the collections of the Whitney Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and the Guggenheim, to name but a few. Until recently, McGowin was Chair of the Art Department at State University College in Old Westbury.

About his ArtDog:
"My dogs name had been Bob and for a while, he appeared to be going through his existence on earth in a happy but uneventful dog way. Ordinary in all respects, brown, plain, solid and well behaved. However, one hot summer day about noon, as Bob and I were sitting in the shade on Kent Hollow Road, a beautiful blue bird like I had never seen before landed on the ground just in front of us. I saw Bob slowly rise and crouching, with his belly dragging in the dust, he inched forward toward the blue bird. At once he lunged and while in mid air the blue bird looked at him, unmoving and defiant as Bob pounced. I had never seen such arrogance and destain from any one or any thing as the bird had for Bob.

All this is taking place in less time than the brain takes to think these words. Still, I saw everything. As Bob descended on the blue bird with his mouth open wide, lips curled, teeth gleaming. The blue bird sprang at Bob like a missile. It flew straight into the mouth of the dog and disappeared. Bob came down ridged, like a stone statue, sitting on his hind quarters with a bewildered look on his face. Bob, from the bottom up, slowly started to become a beautiful shade of a Blue Bird Dog."
