The
Little Guild of St. Francis for the Welfare of Animals is
a no-kill shelter in West Cornwall, CT (in the hills of Litchfield
County). Unclaimed stray and abandoned pets are referred to the
Little Guild by the dog wardens of towns in Northwestern Connecticut.
At the shelter, the animals are groomed, fed nutritious meals, inoculated
and treated by a veterinarian. At the appropriate age, dogs and
cats are spayed and/or neutered. While hundreds of pets are adopted
each year, their policy of keeping animals until a home is found
means that the Little Guild cares for some animals for months, even
years.
And
what do you do when you get that sweet little thing home?
The
Canine Sports Center in Goshen offers a 10% discount on an 8
week Obediance Course for dogs newly adopted from the shelter. Hey.
Do yourself, your family, and your newly adopted pet a favor. Cute
is one thing. Out-of-control six months later is not so cute. Discipline
is what makes Life bearable - even eloquent - because without it,
what begins as simple aggravation will soon blossom into outright
hostility. PHOTO BY: Victoria

BRIEF HISTORY
The Little
Guild was organized in 1957 when Muriel Alvord Ward and Eleanora
Kleinschmidt (aren't those great old-fashioned names?)
developed a plan to alleviate the plight of homeless pets. In 1963
gifts from Colonel and Mrs. Lee Garnet Day and other friends of
animals made it possible to lease a permanent shelter space for
dogs and cats in West Cornwall.
The
Little Guild offers a number of activities for pet owners.
Each
year, on the October Sunday nearest St. Francis' birthday, the Little
Guild holds the popular Blessing of the Animals
service. The Little Guild sponsors an 8-week dog obedience class
and offers a discount to people whose pet was adopted from the shelter.
To help owners of animals from the shelter, the Little Guild has
books, pamphlets and videos on cat and dog care that are available
on loan. Also, on the last Friday of each month, Dale Jones of WZBG
97.3 FM radio interviews someone from the Little Guild on topics
of interest to pet owners.
•
LOCATION: The shelter is located next to the firehouse,
1 ½ miles east of the covered bridge in West Cornwall on
Route 128 (Goshen-Sharon Turnpike). • HOURS Visiting
hours for the public are from 12 to 4, Wednesday, Thursday, and
Friday, and from 11 to 4 on Saturday, and Sunday. The shelter is
closed on Monday, Tuesday and legal holidays.

KENT
KATS
Carol Jalbert

Mrs.
Carol Jalbert, owner of Kent Country Clothes on Main Street, formed
Kent Kats, a rescue and placement organization that was originally
affiliated with M.E.O.W. in Litchfield. Last November, Jalbert split
Kent Kats off from M.E.O.W. and established her own nonprofit organization,
changing the focus from simple rescue and placement to a spaying
and neutering program.

BRIEF HISTORY
"We're
trying to emphasize spaying and neutering,"
said Mrs. Jalbert. "We still place animals, but we're not a
shelter. We've had calls from all over - even from California -
from people who want us to take their cats, but we haven't got the
facilities. There are always more cats out there, so now we are
focusing on trying to alleviate the suffering by helping people
to spay and neuter their animals." A few of the
animals at a time are brought to Country Clothes (an
ArtDogs Sponsor), where they can be viewed by potential owners.
Others are on view at the Kent Feed &
Garden Store
(also an ArtDogs Sponsor), where owners Lori Miller and Becky
Osborne care for them. (860)

Saltmeadow Labradors
For over 30 years Carla Hyndman-Keller has been
breeding Labs who compete successfully in the breed ring, hunt tests
and obedience trials, but most importantly, are loving, family companions.
She recently married and moved to Hew Hampshire but for
decades, was a well known presence on Route 7 in Wilton, Connecticut.
The chocolate Lab pictured on the Chamber
page is "Lionel of
Saltmeadow," my deeply beloved pet who left for greener pastures
last year at age 14. Carla's Labs are known for their English breeding
appearance...large, well-formed heads on stocky powerful bodies.
She is very ethical about breeding standards and passionate about
maintaining those standards.
