Kent Village Housing for the Elderly, Inc. (KVHE) is the non-profit owner of Templeton Farm Senior Apartments, a facility of 24 apartments for independent living for low to moderate income seniors. KVHE was founded in 1974 by Kent residents concerned about the lack of affordable housing for elders in the community, especially Kent residents unable to maintain and/or afford their homes. The mortgage for this housing was provided by the Farmers Home Administration, now part of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (‘USDA’). The groundbreaking took place on September 28, 1975 and the first residents moved in a year later, in late 1976. Twenty-three resident apartments have since housed scores and scores of local elders in studio, one and two bedroom units. Twenty-two subsidies are provided by USDA and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In 2016, the Board of Directors of KVHE created a subsidy fund for the “last person in” to ensure that all those who qualify to live at Templeton Farm, especially very low income elders, are able to do so.
Templeton Farm has been managed under contract since 1976 by Elderly Housing Management, Inc., a North Haven based non-profit. The KVHE board works closely with management to ensure that Templeton Farm provides safe, comfortable and attractive housing. Current residents range in age from 60 plus to 90 plus; most were residents of Kent or nearby towns prior to moving to Templeton Farm, or have family in Kent.
