kEvent Details

For those familiar with Kipling’s Just So Stories, you will recognize the first books for fall as those kinds of origin tales. But rather than teaching us how the elephant got his trunk, we are learning how some of the sub-Saharan countries came to be the way they are.  The stories can be complex, the names sometimes hard to keep sorted out, but each of the novels has a fascinating tale to tell. Complexities abound, from tribal affinities to native customs and religious conflicts. You can look forward to considering both the writing - style and structure -  and subject matter.

This fall the book discussion series at Kent Memorial Library, Into Africa, will begin in September. Here is the 2018 program schedule:

Thursday, September 20  "Dance of the Jakaranda" by Peter Kimani

Takes place from late 19th century to 1960s in Kenya

Thursday, October 18  "Cry The Beloved Country" by Alan Paton

Takes place in 1948 in South Africa

Thursday, November 15  "Half A Yellow Sun"  by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Takes place between 1967 and 1970 in Nigeria/Biafra

Thursday, December 13  "Stay With Me"  by Ayobami Adebayo

Takes place from the 1980s to 2008 in Nigeria

The Kent Memorial Library Book Discussion Group meets once a month on Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:15 p.m. in the Reading Room. The meetings are free and open to the public.

The Library makes every effort to supply books, but requests that people sign up for the meetings so that they know how many copies to order. Please call the Library to register at 860.927.3761.

Discussion is conducted by Betty Krasne, PhD, writer, professor emerita, and long time Kent resident. Betty Krasne, Ph.D., a writer and retired professor of literature who lives in Kent, leads the discussions.
