ABOUT | Litchfield Jazz Camp
Litchfield Jazz Camp (estb. 1997) is the educational arm of the Litchfield Jazz Festival. Both programs are run by Litchfield Performing Arts, a non-profit founded in 1981, whose mission is to offer arts programming that addresses the expressed needs of the community, placing special emphasis on those in financial need. Each summer The Camp, that made Kent School and the town of Kent their new home in 2009, awards up to $100,000 in need-based scholarships and we welcome students of all ages (13+), abilities and backgrounds. Featured in TIME and DownBeat, on CNN and CPTV, LJC is “one of the best and most popular jazz camps in the country,” (JazzImprov Magazine). Not just a life-changing musical experience, it’s a whole lot of fun. Legendary pianist Dave Brubeck said, “I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of this program.”
Students study for as little as one week or as long as a month with other players passionate about jazz. The Camp’s Music Director is the gifted saxophonist/ composer/educator Don Braden, and the faculty includes major touring and recording jazz artists like Matt Wilson, Claudio Roditi, Sheila Jordan, Dave Stryker, Junior Mance and many more. Classes are offered in performance, improvisation, jazz history, rhythm and percussion, music theory and many electives like the business of music, Latin Big Band, Rhythm & Blues Band, Jazz College Fair Night and more. And they perform – at the end of each session, in town for the Jazz in July in Kent series, and at the Litchfield Jazz Festival on a dedicated second stage. Instruction is offered in all major instruments and voice.
Kent School's gorgeous campus and excellent facilities on the banks of the Housatonic River provide the perfect backdrop for the Camp and Festival. Campus is a minute from the center of Kent, the cultural heart of the Litchfield Hills, with an array of art galleries, cafes, shops and more. Kent is 50 miles west of Hartford, under two hours north of New York City, and three hours from Boston. Please visit our website to learn more.
